Busiest night for Bollywood!

what is common to the superhit films like dil to pagal hai and kuch kuch hota hai? The superstitious belief that whatever we wish when seeing a meteor( tootha thara) comes true. This has been used in so many bollywood movies that calling it a cliche would also be cliche!!. There will be a lot of  shooting stars this weekend which should keep our bollywood script writers awake  for a long time!!

The annual Perseid meteor shower is expected to be at its best this year, producing one or two meteors per minute during peak hours.

"It's going to be a great show," said Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama. Look at this video !

Also follow these tips to have a great viewing of the meteorites, and do keep a wish-list handy!

here are some observing tips

Observing tips

To see the show, one need only find a comfortable spot with a clear view of the northeast horizon, away from local lights. A dark rural location is best. Lie back on a blanket or lounge chair and scan the entire sky. In the late evening, starting around 9 p.m. local time, sharp-eyed observers might see "earthgrazing" meteors that skim the northeast horizon.

Earthgrazers are long, slow and colorful.  They are among the most beautiful of meteors.  But don't expect more than a handful in an hour.

Later and during the overnight hours, the shooting stars will be higher in the sky as Perseus rises. Some skywatchers enjoy counting the number of meteors they see per minute, per hour or during a 15-minute interval and comparing notes.

Telescopes and binoculars are no help, as the meteors move too swiftly and are best observed with the naked eye. enjoy!!

Honeymoon on the moon!

Galactic Suite", is set to become the first hotel planned in space. It is  expected to open for business in 2012 and would allow guests to travel around the world in 80 minutes.!!

Go here to get the full details

IBarcelona-based architects say the space hotel will be the most expensive in the galaxy, costing $4 million (1.98 million pounds) for a three-day stay.During that time guests would see the sun rise 15 times a day and use Velcro suits to crawl around their pod rooms by sticking themselves to the walls like Spiderman.

Company director Xavier Claramunt says the three-bedroom boutique hotel's joined up pod structure, which makes it look like a model of molecules, was dictated by the fact that each pod room had to fit inside a rocket to be taken into space. An American company intent on colonising Mars, which sees Galaxy Suite as a first step, has since come on board, and private investors from Japan, the United States and the United Arab Emirates are in talks.

If Claramunt is secretive about the identity of his generous backer, he is more forthcoming about the customer he can expect."We have calculated that there are 40,000 people in the world who could afford to stay at the hotel. Whether they will want to spend money on going into space, we just don't know."

Sreesanth beamer to kevin peitersen

The second test had a lot of drama and emotion, eventhough it will be remembered as the jelly bean test, I think the beamer by sreesanth to KP was also up there in terms of the drama. Mike Artherton has infact called for a ban on sreesanth for the nasty delivery,( he has been fined 50 % of his match fee but that was for a seperate incident). watch the beamer video below, watch the third test live here and watch sreesanths another famous antic here.

The hypocrisy of justice!

As all of you know already, Sanjay Dutt was recently sentenced to six years of rigorous imprisonment for possession of a fire arm during the mumbai riots. Eventhough the court might be right I felt the judgement was a bit harsh. I think that more than possession, the channel he used to obtain the firearms was wrong. And in the same week a court in TN has acquitted the main accused in the coimbatore blast case. So a man who procures a fire arm for his own protection is more culpable than a man who instigates communal violence and abets in a bomb blast ?? This is sheer hypocrisy. watch this video on Sanjay Dutt produced by the BBC.

Darjeeling Limited trailer!

THE DARJEELING LIMITED is an emotional comedy about three brothers and their family bonds. The eldest, played by Wilson, hopes to reconnect with his two younger siblings by taking them on a train trip across the vibrant and sensual landscape of India. Here is the trailer

Disabled athlete may be too fast for his own good

The Hindu has a stirring news story on Oscar Pitrius who hopes to run in the beijing olympics with his artificial legs. Here is an excerpt

It is something, isn’t it, that the most contentious argument in athletics this year concerns the speed of a runner who has no legs.

Oscar Pistorius is 20, brave and, perhaps, too fast for his own good. He is a double amputee, who runs on carbon fibre feet, and wants to run in Beijing. Not in the Paralympics where he is already a gold medallist. But in the Olympics. Like any other man.

But not everyone is convinced he should run in the Olympics, against able-bodied athletes, because they feel he is ‘not’ any other man, but an athlete whose prosthetics give him a technological advantage

Red crab invasion

Wow this is spoooky.!!

Shocking strategy for the second test.

After just escaping defeat by the grace of the rain gods in the first test. The Indian think tank has assembled in a secret location and have been strategizing about the second test. And they have come up with some path breaking innovative ideas to bamboozle the England players. Since then the Indian cricket team has been practising only indoors and the strategy has not yet been revealed to the general public. Vijayanand Kumar Laxminarayana IyeNGar (VKLING for short) our staff report has obtained some exclusive photos from inside the practise halls and he was stunned from what he found. Here are the photos he obtained

Thats right people Sachin Tendulkar and rahul Dravid will bat left handed in the next test!!! and we also have a new weapon in our bowling arsenal Mahendra Singh Dhoni!!!.

Saurav Ganguly not wanting to be left out wanted to try batting right handed but got himself injured in the process. Dont miss the second test catch it live here and thanks to VKLING for the excellent photos.

Rajiv Gandhi Bofors coverup

In a new book by former RAW chief B. Raman "The Kaoboys of R&AW". He alleges that Rajiv Gandhi ordered a coverup of the Bofors scandal. CNN-IBN has this report.

Rediff has another report on the same book in which he says that RSS wanted to setup anti-terrorist cells in Jammu and Kashmir

Raman writes in his book, 'In a potentially controversial move, Vinod Pandey (Cabinet Secretary in the 1989 V P Singh government) wanted R&AW to organise clandestine arms training for the cadres of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in the Jammu area so that they could be used for countering the Pakistan-sponsored terrorists.'
UPDATE: Rediff has a new article today based on the same book by B. Raman (is is going to be one heluva book) In this he says CIA acted alon with ISI to stoke the khalistani movement.
Jagjit Singh Chauhan, a Sikh leader from Punjab, went to the UK and took over the leadership of the defunct Sikh Home Rule movement and renamed it after Khalistan. The then Pakistani military ruler Yahya Khan invited Chauhan to Pakistan, "lionised" him as a leader of Sikhs and handed over some Sikh holy relics kept in Pakistan, which Chauhan took to the UK to win a following in the Sikh diaspora.

10 simple ways to buid your self confidence

John Wessley at pickthebrain.com has an article on how to improve your self confidence instantly. Go there to read the complete article I have listed his main points below.

1. Dress Sharp
2. Walk Faster
3. Good Posture
4. Personal Commercial

"One of the best ways to build confidence is listening to a motivational speech. Unfortunately, opportunities to listen to a great speaker are few and far between. You can fill this need by creating a personal commercial. Write a 30-60 second speech that highlights your strengths and goals. Then recite it in front of the mirror aloud (or inside your head if you prefer) whenever you need a confidence boost."

5. Gratitude

"When you focus too much on what you want, the mind creates reasons why you can’t have it. This leads you to dwell on your weaknesses. The best way to avoid this is consciously focusing on gratitude. Set aside time each day to mentally list everything you have to be grateful for."

6. Compliment other people
7. Sit in the front
8. Speak up
9. Work out
10. Focus on contribution

"Too often we get caught up in our own desires. We focus too much on ourselves and not enough on the needs of other people. If you stop thinking about yourself and concentrate on the contribution you’re making to the rest of the world, you won’t worry as much about you own flaws. This will increase self confidence and allow you to contribute with maximum efficiency. "

Girl passes IIT entrance, loses seat for money

This is sad. she got good marks and also cleared the IIT JEE but wasnt able to get the seat because her father could not pay the Rs. 40,000 entrance fee. It is very difficult for lower middle class and poor families children to get admitted into IIT first of all there is no money for all the tuitions, coaching classes etc which have become essential for IIT nowadays, and now even if they pass the exam they are damned because of the tuition fees. But why didnt any bank come forward to help that poor girl?

Andhra CM abuses Chandrababu Naidu in Assembly!

CNN-IBN has a news report that says YSR used unparliamentary language in the assembly.

The Andhra Pradesh Assembly hit a new low today, when Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Rajashekhar Reddy hurled verbal abuses at Opposition Leader Chandrababu Naidu in full public view.

YSR insulted Naidu's lineage, after the latter accused the Congress-led government of favouring a BJP-MLC in awarding mining contracts. Reddy was trying to make a statement when TDP members started shouting, interrupting him mid-way.

Reddy blew up in anger and used un-parliamentary language against Naidu. “I shall wipe you out on the assembly floor and you shall live to regret why you came out of your mothers womb,” YSR Reddy told Naidu in full assembly.

Pakistan claims Indian links to Lal majid

CNN-IBN has a news story in which Pakistan has claimed that there are links between the Indian diplomats stationed in Islamabad and Afghanistan and the anti-militant operations at Lal Masjid. They quote sources from two pakistani newspapers "The Nation" and "The News".
The Nation quoted a Pakistani official as claiming that Pakistani security agencies had “found a passport of Indian origin from Lal Masjid after completion of the operation.”
The Nation also quoted an unnamed official as claiming that "the investigators have gathered 'rock-hard' proof about involvement of the neighbouring country in the anti-Army attacks in Pakistan.”

The News, quoted unnamed officials to suggest that "Indian diplomats have suddenly become more active and started meeting different government officials, politicians and lawyers secretly after March 9.”

"Two Indian embassy diplomats were seen hobnobbing with some senior officials (not judges) of the Supreme Court on June 14 this year.

I searched The Nation website but could not find the links to the above quotes. The News had this small item on this
As usual in Pakistan, there has also been speculation about the involvement of the intelligence services of the country’s bitter rival India in several of the attacks. Improving ties between China and India in recent years have worried Islamabad, despite a three-year-old peace process between India and Pakistan, and Pakistan has openly accused India of fomenting unrest in Balochistan

aspartame or cancer time?

For a few years now we have been hearing rumours about how artificial sweeteners are harmful to your health. Now a medical reasearch team from Italy have experimantally demonstrated the multipotential carcinogenic effects of aspartame. Here is an excerpt from their abstract (click here to get the full paper)

The Cesare Maltoni Cancer Research Center of the European Ramazzini Foundation has conducted a long-term bioassay on aspartame (APM), a widely used artificial sweetener. APM was administered with feed to 8-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats (100-150/sex/group), at concentrations of 100,000, 50,000, 10,000, 2,000, 400, 80, or 0 ppm. The treatment lasted until natural death, at which time all deceased animals underwent complete necropsy. Histopathologic evaluation of all pathologic lesions and of all organs and tissues collected was routinely performed on each animal of all experimental groups. The results of the study show for the first time that APM, in our experimental conditions, causes

a) an increased incidence of malignant-tumor-bearing animals with a positive significant trend in males and in females , in particular those females treated at 50,000 ppm

b) an increase in lymphomas and leukemias with a positive significant trend in both males and females, in particular in females treated at doses of 100,000, 50,000 , 10,000 , 2,000 or 400 ppm.

c) a positive significant trend of transitional cell carcinomas of the renal pelvis and ureter and their precursors (dysplasias) in females treated at 100,000 50,000, 10,000 , 2,000 or 400 ppm ; and

d) an increased incidence of malignant schwannomas of peripheral nerves with a positive trend in males.

Interpreter(2005) movie review

Interpreter starring Nicole kidman and sean pean is an excellent movie. Sylvia (Nicole Kidman) is an interpreter at the UN General Assembly( The movie was actually shot in the genreal assembly and the security council buildings which itself is worth seeing). she overhears somebody planning to assasinate a dictator
(Zuwanie) from an african country.
The secret service agent (sean penn) doesn't believe in her initially but after a murder attempt on Sylivia they believe her. The rest of the story is about who the assasins are and why they try to kill her .There are some excellent quotes from the movie

Silvia : Vengeance is a lazy form of grief.

Silvia : Everyone who loses somebody wants revenge, on God if they can't find anyone else. But in Africa, in Matobo, the Ku believe that the only way to end grief is to save a life. If someone is murdered, a year of mourning ends with a ritual that we call the Drowning Man Trial. There's an all-night party beside a river. At dawn, the killer is put in a boat. He's taken out on the water and he's dropped. He's bound so that he can't swim. The family of the dead then has to choose. They can let him drown or they can save him. The Ku believe that if the family lets the killer drown, they'll have justice but spend the rest of their lives in mourning. But if they save him, if they admit that life isn't always just... that very act can take away their sorrow.

Zuwanie(dictator): THE GUNFIRE AROUND us makes it hard to hear. But the human voice is different from other sounds. It can be heard over noises that bury everything else. Even when it's not shouting. Even when it's just a whisper. Even the lowest whisper can be heard - -over armies... when it's telling the truth.
Plus Points: excellent photography shot in the UN general assembly beautiful dialogues
Minus Points: a bit slow
Movie Rating:

famous female painters from India

Let me state at the very beginning that I am more of a science person then an art peorson and rennaisance, surrealism etc etc are greek and latin to me. I have never understood mordern art with their vague and random splashes of color and people interpreting a "deeper meaning " to it in their own way. The only mordern art I liked is sand art.

Anyway this blog is not about me its about my neighbor who is from poland and has a cute 12 year old daughter who asked me about famous painters from India for a class project she was doing. I named a few I know Ravi Varma, Bapu, MF Hussain actually they were the only people I knew. And then she asked me if I Could name a female painter. I was dumbfounded I had no idea and nobody came to my mind, I have been trying to hide from her for the last two days as I didnt have an answer. So please anyone who know an answer please include the name in the comments.

From my limited knowledge of famous painters of the world I realised that there are very few female painters I know except for Monalisa (oh wait she was the painting not the painter hmmmm.)

Growing up I remember that the arts class was the girls class they enjoyed it so much painting, gluing, "chamki"Ing etc. while my greatest art creation was a black road which I had to make wider at one end to fit in a car on it and a well beside it ( I later realised that I got the extrapoints from my arts teacher because she thought the whole contraption was a helicopter dont ask me how!!). Anyways I thought girls had a penchant for art and I was rather surprised I dod not know any famous female painters form India. what is the reason for this??
