what is common to the superhit films like dil to pagal hai and kuch kuch hota hai? The superstitious belief that whatever we wish when seeing a meteor( tootha thara) comes true. This has been used in so many bollywood movies that calling it a cliche would also be cliche!!. There will be a lot of shooting stars this weekend which should keep our bollywood script writers awake for a long time!!
The annual Perseid meteor shower is expected to be at its best this year, producing one or two meteors per minute during peak hours.
"It's going to be a great show," said Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama. Look at this video !
Also follow these tips to have a great viewing of the meteorites, and do keep a wish-list handy!
here are some observing tips
Observing tips
To see the show, one need only find a comfortable spot with a clear view of the northeast horizon, away from local lights. A dark rural location is best. Lie back on a blanket or lounge chair and scan the entire sky. In the late evening, starting around 9 p.m. local time, sharp-eyed observers might see "earthgrazing" meteors that skim the northeast horizon.
Earthgrazers are long, slow and colorful. They are among the most beautiful of meteors. But don't expect more than a handful in an hour.
Later and during the overnight hours, the shooting stars will be higher in the sky as Perseus rises. Some skywatchers enjoy counting the number of meteors they see per minute, per hour or during a 15-minute interval and comparing notes.
Telescopes and binoculars are no help, as the meteors move too swiftly and are best observed with the naked eye. enjoy!!
Galactic Suite", is set to become the first hotel planned in space. It is expected to open for business in 2012 and would allow guests to travel around the world in 80 minutes.!!
Go here to get the full details
IBarcelona-based architects say the space hotel will be the most expensive in the galaxy, costing $4 million (1.98 million pounds) for a three-day stay.During that time guests would see the sun rise 15 times a day and use Velcro suits to crawl around their pod rooms by sticking themselves to the walls like Spiderman.
Company director Xavier Claramunt says the three-bedroom boutique hotel's joined up pod structure, which makes it look like a model of molecules, was dictated by the fact that each pod room had to fit inside a rocket to be taken into space. An American company intent on colonising Mars, which sees Galaxy Suite as a first step, has since come on board, and private investors from Japan, the United States and the United Arab Emirates are in talks.
If Claramunt is secretive about the identity of his generous backer, he is more forthcoming about the customer he can expect."We have calculated that there are 40,000 people in the world who could afford to stay at the hotel. Whether they will want to spend money on going into space, we just don't know."
TIME and CNN are celebrating sixty years of Indian independence and have a wonderful series of articles on India and its journey through these sixty years. Have a look, if you don't have time(pun intended) at least look at the graphics on post 7 and 8.

As all of you know already, Sanjay Dutt was recently sentenced to six years of rigorous imprisonment for possession of a fire arm during the mumbai riots. Eventhough the court might be right I felt the judgement was a bit harsh. I think that more than possession, the channel he used to obtain the firearms was wrong. And in the same week a court in TN has acquitted the main accused in the coimbatore blast case. So a man who procures a fire arm for his own protection is more culpable than a man who instigates communal violence and abets in a bomb blast ?? This is sheer hypocrisy. watch this video on Sanjay Dutt produced by the BBC.
I remember learning many tips and tricks for my engineering entrance test. I have forgotten most of them and in engineering I got so addicted to the calculator that now even two multiply 4 times 5 I use a calc. This is a cool video showing an useful trick to calculate the product of two numbers within 5 secs. It is very easy even a fifth grader can do this !.
It is something, isn’t it, that the most contentious argument in athletics this year concerns the speed of a runner who has no legs.
Oscar Pistorius is 20, brave and, perhaps, too fast for his own good. He is a double amputee, who runs on carbon fibre feet, and wants to run in Beijing. Not in the Paralympics where he is already a gold medallist. But in the Olympics. Like any other man.
But not everyone is convinced he should run in the Olympics, against able-bodied athletes, because they feel he is ‘not’ any other man, but an athlete whose prosthetics give him a technological advantage
Raman writes in his book, 'In a potentially controversial move, Vinod Pandey (Cabinet Secretary in the 1989 V P Singh government) wanted R&AW to organise clandestine arms training for the cadres of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in the Jammu area so that they could be used for countering the Pakistan-sponsored terrorists.'UPDATE: Rediff has a new article today based on the same book by B. Raman (is is going to be one heluva book) In this he says CIA acted alon with ISI to stoke the khalistani movement.
Jagjit Singh Chauhan, a Sikh leader from Punjab, went to the UK and took over the leadership of the defunct Sikh Home Rule movement and renamed it after Khalistan. The then Pakistani military ruler Yahya Khan invited Chauhan to Pakistan, "lionised" him as a leader of Sikhs and handed over some Sikh holy relics kept in Pakistan, which Chauhan took to the UK to win a following in the Sikh diaspora.
5. Gratitude"One of the best ways to build confidence is listening to a motivational speech. Unfortunately, opportunities to listen to a great speaker are few and far between. You can fill this need by creating a personal commercial. Write a 30-60 second speech that highlights your strengths and goals. Then recite it in front of the mirror aloud (or inside your head if you prefer) whenever you need a confidence boost."
"When you focus too much on what you want, the mind creates reasons why you can’t have it. This leads you to dwell on your weaknesses. The best way to avoid this is consciously focusing on gratitude. Set aside time each day to mentally list everything you have to be grateful for."
"Too often we get caught up in our own desires. We focus too much on ourselves and not enough on the needs of other people. If you stop thinking about yourself and concentrate on the contribution you’re making to the rest of the world, you won’t worry as much about you own flaws. This will increase self confidence and allow you to contribute with maximum efficiency. "
The Andhra Pradesh Assembly hit a new low today, when Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Rajashekhar Reddy hurled verbal abuses at Opposition Leader Chandrababu Naidu in full public view.
YSR insulted Naidu's lineage, after the latter accused the Congress-led government of favouring a BJP-MLC in awarding mining contracts. Reddy was trying to make a statement when TDP members started shouting, interrupting him mid-way.
Reddy blew up in anger and used un-parliamentary language against Naidu. “I shall wipe you out on the assembly floor and you shall live to regret why you came out of your mothers womb,” YSR Reddy told Naidu in full assembly.

The Nation quoted a Pakistani official as claiming that Pakistani security agencies had “found a passport of Indian origin from Lal Masjid after completion of the operation.”
The Nation also quoted an unnamed official as claiming that "the investigators have gathered 'rock-hard' proof about involvement of the neighbouring country in the anti-Army attacks in Pakistan.”
The News, quoted unnamed officials to suggest that "Indian diplomats have suddenly become more active and started meeting different government officials, politicians and lawyers secretly after March 9.”
"Two Indian embassy diplomats were seen hobnobbing with some senior officials (not judges) of the Supreme Court on June 14 this year.
As usual in Pakistan, there has also been speculation about the involvement of the intelligence services of the country’s bitter rival India in several of the attacks. Improving ties between China and India in recent years have worried Islamabad, despite a three-year-old peace process between India and Pakistan, and Pakistan has openly accused India of fomenting unrest in Balochistan
The Cesare Maltoni Cancer Research Center of the European Ramazzini Foundation has conducted a long-term bioassay on aspartame (APM), a widely used artificial sweetener. APM was administered with feed to 8-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats (100-150/sex/group), at concentrations of 100,000, 50,000, 10,000, 2,000, 400, 80, or 0 ppm. The treatment lasted until natural death, at which time all deceased animals underwent complete necropsy. Histopathologic evaluation of all pathologic lesions and of all organs and tissues collected was routinely performed on each animal of all experimental groups. The results of the study show for the first time that APM, in our experimental conditions, causes
a) an increased incidence of malignant-tumor-bearing animals with a positive significant trend in males and in females , in particular those females treated at 50,000 ppm

d) an increased incidence of malignant schwannomas of peripheral nerves with a positive trend in males.
